Raw Materials

Items needed to build the frame for a 10' section of the Dragon's body:

  1. THREE regular 10' schedule 40 1/2" PVC pipes.(solvent) These can be white or gray, doesn't matter. If you are building a 10 foot section, you might ask the store to cut two of your pipes to 9' long. Also, if space is an issue getting your dragon to the playa, you can cut all of your PVC "in half". If you do, then you will need THREE 1/2" PVC COUPLERS to reattach them. 
  2. THREE standard size Hula Hoops (they seem to vary in size from 33-35" diameter) any of these will work fine. I bought hula hoops at walmart that have a flat outer edge. I think they'll be easier to glue fabric too. (you might check "Dollar Stores" also)
  3. ONE 1/2" PVC Union (solvent). Brands carried by Home Depot, Ace Hardware, or True Value. The brand carried by Lowes is NOT compatible. (The inside "thread diameter" of the female threaded collar should be 1 3/4".) White or Grey works fine. Look for either KBI Brand or Mueller B&K Brand.   
  4. ONE roll Electrical Tape. (Electrical tape seems to go on smoother than Duct Tape, but either will work).
  5. Muslin or Bedsheets. (I bought the complete piece of Natural Muslin at Jo-ann's Fabric Store for $18) The finished size needs to be 10'.6" long (minimum) by 108" wide. (Just ask for 10 and a half feet of 108" muslin). If you use bedsheets (thrift stores), you'll need to glue or sew them to the right dimensions. 
  6. PVC Cutters or hack saw. (you'll need to cut two of the PVC pipes down to 9' long) Just the top "spine" is 10' long (with the pvc union on the front and back)
  7. Decor - (spray paint - appliques - whatever ya want) Just be sure it cant come off and become moop)
  8. Battery Operated Lighting, Glow Sticks etc. (these items are optional and only required for the Dragons "Night Raids")
